The original Reservoir was built by the Bristol Waterworks Company in 1850. Clean water came from a spring at Barrow Gurney and ran in an inverted siphon to the pumping station in Clifton. Blagdon Reservoir was added to the system in 1899 and Chew Valley Reservoir in 1955. The new water tower was built in 1954 to improve pressure and in 2014 to add resilience a link to the Sharpness canal south of Gloucester was created.
